Hey Everybody,
Thanks to the contributions of TrueAiki.com readers (and my good luck at second hand shopping), I am pleased to be able to present the first of many True Aiki Archive videos!
This one was shot by my brother in law in 1991. He offered to take me to Yamagata (from Sendai) and so I asked if I could bring along a couple other people (that were training with Jon Stevens in Sendai.). Luckily he said, “Shure!”
I went to Japan alone that year just to train. My father had terminal colon cancer and just died. So, I went to clear my head. I didn’t know that Shirata sensei had stomach cancer and would soon die as well.
This class took place at the (then) new Yamagata Sports Center. Shirata sensei regularly taught at the Yamagata City Budokan as well. I cut the video in half for the sake of not having it be too long. The first half Shirata sensei taught various typical Shiho Nage. The second half he taught some of his jo work.
It is just a regular class, but since video of Shirata Sensei is scarce I am sharing it.
