I imagine that many in the Aikido community has heard of the symbolic meanings of the triangle, circle and square. One might have also heard of the physical meanings to the shapes as well. Triangle is irimi, Circle is tankan, and Square is Osae.
But has knowing these things helped your physical practice? In other words, does knowing a Triangle represents irimi help your irimi? Does knowing a Circle represents tankan help your tankan? How does knowing that a square represents Osae help your osaewaza?
My guess is the honest answer to these questions is, “No.” Knowing what they represent doesn’t help one’s physical practice any more than knowing what they symbolize in a broader sense.
Why am I pointing this out? Because there is more to the triangle, circle and square than you were ever taught!
If you haven’t figured it out yet, a practical (usable) application of the theory of Triangle, Circle and Square (TCS for convenience) is the subject of my next series of blog posts. And, yes, this post is a blatant teaser for that series!
I haven’t read about this ANYWHERE at ANYTIME, nor have I heard or seen Aiki waza explained in this manner. To my mind it is a simple, direct, easily understood and to begin, understanding and approach that is universally applicable.
As this is so, I am curious to see how quickly the idea spreads from invisible, not discussed, and nonexistent, to “Oh yeah, we do that already!,” to “My teacher said that all along!” Until we get to, “What? You didn’t know about that?” and “Oh that’s old news!,” “Everybody knows that!” Cognitive Consistency Theory explains why I can, and do, expect this to occur.
Personally, I hope that happens because I think that the understanding and application of this approach will help to raise the level of people’s practice.
Curious? I hope so! Even the haters out should there be pleased. There’s something for everyone! Win/Win!
